# Work a Work Order

Each step a work order takes is recorded in its history with a timestamp. Those timestamps are what the maintenance KPIs are calculated from:

| From | To | Measures |
|---|---|---|
| Created | First response, such as Assigned | **MTTA**: how fast work is picked up |
| In Progress | Completed | **MTTR**: how fast work is done |

:::action[Assign and start the work]

1. In **Maintenance → Work Orders**, open `Machine 1 - Coolant leak`.
2. Set **Assigned To** to `technician`. The work order moves to **Assigned**.
3. Log in as `technician`, open the work order, and click **In Progress** at the bottom of the panel.
4. Set **Work Type** to `Repair`.

:::

:::action[Log labor and complete the work]

1. Add an entry to the work order's **Technicians** list: technician `technician`, work type `Repair`, 45 minutes.
2. Add a second entry for yourself: work type `Inspection`, 15 minutes. Two people working one job each log their own time.
3. Add a comment, such as `Replaced cracked coolant return hose`.
4. Click **Completed**.
5. Open the **History** tab and review each status change and who made it.

:::

If a job can't continue, for example while waiting for parts, put it **On Hold** instead of leaving it In Progress. On Hold is in the waiting category, so the backlog shows the job as waiting rather than being worked.

:::tip[Parts used]
If you take the [Kanoa Inventory training](../../7-training-inventory/index.md), you'll issue the replacement hose from the storeroom to this work order, so its cost and stock movement are tracked together.
