# Measures

Counts and states tell you how much an asset produced and whether it was running. **Measures** capture *how* it was running: temperatures, pressures, speeds, weights, thicknesses.

Storing every raw sample from a sensor that updates several times a second quickly becomes millions of rows a day. A measure instead collects values in a tag over a **window**, either a number of samples or a length of time. At the end of the window it writes one record holding the statistics: mean, standard deviation, min, max, sample count and control limits. You keep the shape of the signal at a fraction of the storage.

In this section you will:

- Create a simulated coolant temperature tag for Machine 1.
- Define a `Coolant Temperature` measure and connect its tag.
- Read the results on the Measures analysis screen and, with a Quality license, turn on SPC checks.
